THEODON

The mounting issues that demand my attention are growing too great for me to shoulder.

Has fate not given me enough to handle? First with Viktor’s failing vision and sanity, then with Kwil’s partial transformation into the very thing we hunt. That should have been more than enough for one man to tackle. With the issues that come with keeping these two from our Brotherhood’s attention, I’ve gone above and beyond to protect them and to keep to our mission as Ghosts. We’ve abandoned our post, hidden and stolen from other Ghosts, and avoided any summons back to the Brotherhood’s temple. It won’t be long before they determine we’ve Fallen if they haven’t already. Once that happens, they’ll send warriors out to find and kill us. When that time comes, I’ll protect my brothers from that threat as well.

But how do I protect them from a cursed necromancer who is keeping pieces of our souls? Or from a book that demands to be used by her?

The sword at my hip bounces against my ankle as my booted feet pace back and forth in the small dining room. What am I going to do about Willow and Jonah? Those two are going to be a problem. If the sounds coming from their room last night are any indication of how they are going to act, we’re going to have to set some boundaries. We cannot fight monsters during the day and stay up all night listening to the two of them go at it like bunnies.

I’m also going to have to figure out this ache in my chest. While she and Kwil were running their errands the other evening, the pain flared back up just as painfully as it had while in the Third Realm. It’s lessened significantly since her arrival to this new safehouse, but I still feel unsettled. I know it’s because of her. This feeling, while faint, disappears the closer I am to the necromancer.

Willow is up now trying to be quiet as she rummages through the kitchen cabinets. I can hear her whispering, but I’ve tuned her out as I try to consider our next steps. But as time passes, the smell of something delicious wafts through the air. I hardly touched the dinner Kwil and Willow brought home last night, too anxious to eat. Now, my stomach is demanding whatever it is Willow is cooking up.

Hunger and curiosity win out over the need for solitude. I stop pacing and head into the kitchen.

“Yeah, he sounds like a real dick, Emma,” Willow says as she moves the large skillet off the stovetop and turns off heat.

At the same time, a timer goes off. She grabs an oven mitt, opens the oven, and pulls out a dozen perfectly cooked biscuits. After placing the tray on the counter, she pulls off and tosses the oven mitt beside it. She seems oblivious to my presence as I stand there watching her from the doorway.

“But look at where you are now and look at where he is,” she continues.
